چکیده

The Antarctic plateau provides the best terrestrial sites for infrared and sub millimetre astronomy In this paper we examine the relative importance of temperature aerosol content and precipitable water vapour to determine which parameters have the greatest in uence on atmospheric transmission and sky brightness We use the atmospheric modelling program MODTRAN to model the observed sky spectrum at the South Pole from the near IR to the sub millimetre We nd that temperature and aerosol content determine the quality of near IR observing conditions aerosol content is the determining factor in the mid IR up to m while at longer wavelengths including the sub millimetre it is the water vapour content that matters Finding a location where aerosol levels are minimised is a key constraint in determining the optimum site on the Antarctic plateau for an infrared observatory

Infrared and sub-millimetre atmospheric characteristics of high Antarctic plateau sites

The best ground-based astronomical sites in terms of telescope sensitivity at infrared and sub-millimetre wavelengths are located on the Antarctic plateau – where high atmospheric transparency and low sky emission are observed due to the extremely cold and dry air; these benefits are well characterised at the South Pole station. The relative advantages offered by three potentially superior site...

Near—infrared sky brightness monitor for the South Pole

The antarctic plateau has the potential for being the best site on Earth for conducting astronomical observations from the near-infrared to the sub-millimeter. Particular gains are expected in the 1 to 5 micron region, where the high altitude, low water vapour content, and low thermal emission from the atmosphere combine to create observing conditions unequalled elsewhere on the surface of the ...

Infrared and Submillimetre Observing Conditions on the Antarctic Plateau

The Antarctic Plateau provides the best terrestrial sites for infrared (IR) and submillimetre (sub-mm) astronomy. In this paper we examine the relative importance of temperature, aerosol content and precipitable water vapour to determine which parameters have the greatest influence on atmospheric transmission and sky brightness. We use the atmospheric modelling program MODTRAN to model the obse...

Dome C — the best astronomical site in the world ?

A decade of site testing at the South Pole has shown that the Antarctic Plateau can offer enormous opportunities for astronomers. The combination of extreme cold and dryness, high altitude and very low wind speeds throughout the troposphere confers powerful advantages—especially for infrared and sub-millimetre astronomy. However, Dome C is higher, drier and colder than South Pole, and has signi...

The Scienti c Case for Antarctic Astronomy

The Antarctic Plateau is almost certainly the best site on the surface of the Earth for many types of astronomical observations The extremely cold dry and tenuous atmosphere o ers observing conditions unequalled elsewhere on our planet Undertaking astronomy from the Plateau does however present a considerable challenge to our logistical and technological capabilities A clear understanding of th...
